The tale of a family that tells of India’s wild wonders through the lens

Both Rajesh and Naresh feel that it was a very “expensive” and an “unpredictable” job. “The aim of measuring up to the standards of The National Geographic had been heavily engrained in our minds by dad. From the beginning, we worked to carve our way to National Geographic,” recalls Rajesh while Naresh goes on to explain that “photography as a profession back then was unheard of but I’m glad that it has all turned out positively for us. The kick that you get after you have filmed places and animals which no one has ever seen, I’m sure cannot be felt in any other job,” he continues. Although, at times, Naresh would have these thoughts about renouncing this choice of career but his passion for unravelling the marvels of nature always held him strong. And this passion and adeptness made him the first and the only Indian to be nominated for two wildlife films for British Academy Awards which is equivalent to the Oscars. Apart from these, he has also been conferred with the Green Oscar at the International Wildlife Film and Television Festival.

This magical boon bestowed on Naresh and Rajesh Bedi also trickled to the second generation Bedi brothers. And it’s not just the choice of profession but the accolades achieved, has also percolated down the lineage. Sons of the Green Oscar winner, the twin brothers Ajay and Vijay are the youngest Asian recipients of the Green Oscar. Also the first Indians to be nominated for The National Academy Awards and with their film on Red Pandas being the first Indian wildlife film to be nominated for Emmy Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Awards, definitely show signs of the inherited talent matching their father and uncle’s achievements. But Vijay’s admiration for Naresh and Rajesh comes with dollops of modesty – “My father and uncle have a perfect understanding. Ajay and I are lucky to have been guided by them...there is always something new to learn from them.
